What High Low is

A card game of one decision, played only with virtual Bolts. One card is face up. You call whether the next one is higher or lower. Every correct call moves the run one step up the ladder; a wrong call ends it. No real money is involved at any point — not to deal, not to keep calling.

One run, in order

Set the stake with the two buttons. It is a count of virtual Bolts placed in this one run, and nothing on the page raises it for you.
Press Deal a card, or the space bar. The stake leaves your virtual balance and the run opens at x1.00.
Call Higher or Lower against the card in play.
A correct call moves one step up the ladder, and the turned card becomes the card in play.
A tie is a push: the ladder holds where it is, the turned card becomes the card in play, and you call again. Nothing is taken and nothing is added.
From the first correct call, Collect banks the run: the Bolts riding on it go onto your virtual balance in this browser and no further.
A wrong call ends the run and everything riding on it. Dealing again costs nothing but virtual Bolts.

How the cards come up

Every card is drawn on the spot, in your own browser, from the same 12 ranks. Each draw is independent: the card that turns over knows nothing about the card in play, about what you called, or about how long the run has gone. Nothing is stored and nothing carries over. A long run of nothing does not ripen into anything, and a long run of correct calls uses nothing up.

Both calls pay the same ladder. How many of the 12 ranks a call covers depends only on the card in play: against a 3, higher covers nine ranks; against a 10, lower covers nine. That is printed here because leaving it out would be worse. It is arithmetic about 12 virtual cards and describes nothing outside this page.

The ladder numbers above were picked so a session lasts. With no money anywhere near the game they cannot have been picked for anything else.

A free allowance of Bolts arrives every three hours, and a balance that runs down is topped up at no charge. Playing costs nothing and buying is never required.

The stake is virtual. Bolts are counters kept in this browser. They cannot be withdrawn, exchanged for money, goods or vouchers, traded, gifted or moved to another player, and nothing that happens in this game produces a prize.
